Back on the Keto Wagon
- 3 minutes read - 511 wordsAbout a month before I started this blog, I ate strict Keto[1] for about 2 weeks, in conjunction with 16/8 Intermittent Fasting[2]. I lost a bunch of weight, probably about 15 lbs, and got to inside of 5 pounds of what I think is my goal weight. Then I went on a trip…
So fast forward from early August when I got back from the trip to Late September. Today, September 29, 2020, is day two back on Keto in a serious way. I did the IF pretty consistently in that time. I managed to keep my weight reasonable that whole time, but during my keto time before that, I had lost a lot of belly fat, which is a long term goal. So I decided to go back to Keto, and see if I can’t make it stick as a lifestyle, rather than just a diet.
Keto seems like it’s going to be an expensive way to eat since you eat a ton of meat and fat. You do eat a lot of fresh vegetables (I do keep a supply of frozen veggies as well, just in case), and it’s a pretty comfortable way for me to eat, assuming I can keep the food in the house and fresh enough. Maybe if my hunting endeavors pay off later this fall, I can save some money by stocking the freezer with game meat rather than store-bought. And would provide some additional chances to learn to cook new things.
The other pitfall is my kids. They really like starchy foods (mac & cheese, lasagna, etc.) and sweets, and given where I am in the separation and divorce process, not to mention the stresses of COVID-19, I’m not particularly looking to be too strict about things with them right now. So we’ll see how it goes over the next several weekends, and see if I can resist eating the stuff I prepare for them, or if I have to clear things out and not trust willpower alone. I already know I can’t keep peanuts in the house. They’re not really keto-friendly from most of the things I’ve read, and they are just too good, so while I may weigh out a 1 oz portion, I’m back for a second portion soon after.
So you, dear reader, get to follow me on this journey. I hope to tie this in with my goal of learning to cook better and maybe get some parenting tie-ins as well. As always, check back soon for my new adventures in self-improvement and reinvention.

[1] Keto is short for the Ketogenic Diet, and is a form of diet that involves eating very (20g/day) low carbohydrates, and very high fat.
[2] Intermittent Fasting, or IF, is the practice of either not eating for an extended amount of time, or eating during a limited “window” of time. In the case of 16/8 IF, it means I don’t eat for 16 hours in the day, roughly 8 PM to noon, then eat for 8 hours a day, noon to 8 PM.
